Cataloochie State Park | A Hidden Gem

Nestled in the foothills of North Carolina in the Great Smokey Mountains is Cataloochie State Park.  The park has remnants of what life was like at the turn on the century.  From old houses and barns, to graveyards that date back to the 1800's this state park is the remains of a once thriving fishing town.

Life was hard back then, especially being as remote as this community of Cataloochie was.  Back in 2006 the state shipped in some Elk and raised them to introduce them back into the wild life where their ancestors once roamed.  Now as most of the elk are fully grown and have started to reproduce, during rutting season they emerge from the woods early in the mornings and late into the evening.  We were lucky enough to witness these amazing creatures and to capture some of it on camera.

I hope you enjoy the pictures of this beautiful place and sometime in the future get to visit this magical piece of history.
